On your Submissions page, you'll see we use a few different statuses to tell you what's currently happening with your submission. This article explains the status timed-out.

Every study has a time limit. If you go over this time limit you won't be able to submit the study.

Why was my study timed-out?

Before starting a study, you can see the maximum time allowed by hovering over the "intended time of completion" on the study page.

Exceeding this time limit will result in a "timed-out" submission status, and these submissions typically don't receive payment.

Our time-out feature ensures studies are completed within a reasonable timeframe while giving participants enough time to finish successfully. It automatically times out participants who become inactive.

To help you plan accordingly, we display two key figures before you begin each study: Intended completion time and Maximum Time allowed.

Intended Completion Time

The Intended Completion Time is how long the researcher expects the study to take.

Maximum Time Allowed

The Maximum Time Allowed is set by Prolific based on the Intended Completion Time. This represents the total time you have to complete the study—if you go over this limit, your submission will time-out.
